  • Issue 4

    Issue 4 of 'Traveling Through History' features an article on Stokesay Castle in Shropshire, England. Built in the 13th century, the castle belonged to wealthy wool merchant Laurence of Ludlow. The well-preserved manor house includes a great hall, towers, and a gatehouse, and it offers visitors a glimpse into the history of the castle and the surrounding area.

    The newsletter also covers the launch of Alison Weirโ€™s new book โ€˜Henry VIII: The Heart & the Crownโ€, takes us to look at Queen Victoriaโ€™s coronation portrait at the National Portrait Gallery and a list of events in history for this week that includes the opening of Tower Bridge across the Thames in 1894.

    In this issue we travel to Goodrich Castle, a fine example of English military architecture. It is a Norman medieval castle located in Herefordshire, England, with a rich history of ownership, modifications, and eventual ruin during the Civil War.

    The newsletter also covers recent royal events, including the annual Trooping the Colour overseen by King Charles and the Order of the Garter Ceremony at Windsor Castle, as well as the upcoming Royal Ascot Week.

    Michelle, also known as the Savvy Travel Historian, shares her passion for history and travel in the first issue of Traveling Through History. She recounts her journey from being a content marketer to studying history at the University of Oxford, ultimately earning a master's degree.

    In this inaugural issue, she introduces the June theme of castles and highlights Hever Castle, the childhood home of Anne Boleyn, along with its historical significance and visitor attractions. She also includes information about staying overnight in the Tudor village behind the castle and recommends visiting the Henry VIII pub nearby.

    The issue concludes with mentions of the V&A Museum in London, historical events from June, and a book recommendation on Anne Boleyn.
